Friends on the Block utilizes all 5 pillars of the Science of Reading—phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension—to teach learners with intensive needs. Every lesson begins with direct instruction that includes phonemic awareness and phonics. Every lesson ends with learning games that promote fluency through repetition and cumulative review. Every lesson centers around an easily decodable text that includes scaffolding that supports vocabulary development. Every lesson includes comprehension questions on three different levels so that teachers can tailor the lessons to students’ ability levels.
Friends on the Block was designed to be implemented by regular and special education teachers and parents. Any English-speaking adult can utilize the Teacher’s Guides and other resources to facilitate effective instruction. The team at Friends on the Block is available to answer questions and make recommendations via our contact form. We can also provide teacher training for a reasonable fee upon request.
At Friends on the Block, we understand that parents, teachers, and even school districts have limited funds. To help you compare prices among our eMemberships and the Complete Curriculum Kit, we have created an informative Product Comparison Chart.
We also know that many teachers are required to use the resources currently on hand and can only supplement their current literacy curriculum with our leveled readers, instructional games, or flashcards. We would be happy to help you determine how to incorporate our innovative materials in a way that complements what you are using already. Just complete our contact form, and we will get in touch with you to arrange a free consultation.
Of course! We at Friends on the Block are more than happy to work with your administration to help facilitate the approval of your purchase order. We are eager to send you a price quote for whatever materials you are interested in. Simply return to our Products and continue browsing. Once you’ve filled your shopping cart with the items you want, go through the usual checkout procedure, but instead of paying upfront, choose “Manual Payment.” After you’ve “placed your order,” our business administrator will create a price quote for you to submit to your Purchasing Director. Please give our administrator at least a day to complete your request.
The Complete Curriculum Kit comes with detailed directions on delivering effective instruction and immediate feedback. Friends on the Block, however, does offer teacher training. Dr. Jill Allor, the chief researcher and developer of FOTB, can come to your school to provide in-depth training to ensure your students get the most out of the FOTB Literacy Curriculum. Prices are based on travel time and accommodation expenses. Please complete the contact form. A member of the team will respond shortly.
